Alzheimer's which is a progressive disease destroys ones memory and other vital mental functions. The disease is inherited. It is said that people who have the Apo E4 gene have high chances of getting the disease. There are millions of people all over the world who already have this disease and several more will get it.
The bad thing about this condition is that it has no known treatment. Available medications just manage it which is a short-term solution. However, even with the disease all is not lost. If you do not have Alzheimer's there are several things that you can do to save yourself.
Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease symptoms are not a one time sign. They get noticed gradually and generally centre around loss of memory. However, they get more serious with the advancement of the condition. If left unattended to, it will get to a point where the patient cannot care for themselves or live alone. Each stage of Alzheimer's disease; mild, moderate and advanced has its symptoms. Mild Stage Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease
· Forgets most things even those that took place recently.
· Loses interest in performing one's duties. The patient tends to idle around sleeping, sitting or just sit back and watch TV
· The patient has reduced drive to perform tasks and energy.
· Have problem with language. The patient finds it hard to understand either themselves or others.
· Has problems coordinating even with familiar things.
· Lose interest in things due to mood swings etc.
Moderate Stage Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include;
· Gets displeased or irritated easily for no apparent reason
· Sleeplessness
· Problems solving or planning tasks
· Confused speech
· Having Hallucinations etc
Advanced Stage Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include;
· Lose of memory
· Communication problems
· Difficulties walking
· Increased appetite
· Weight loss
· Unable to control bowl movement etc
This disease is the major cause of dementia. One of the risk factors of Alzheimer's is age. Though the condition is not part of the aging process, the risk is high to those who are above 65. Genetics and family history are also risk factors. Chances of getting the disease are high to people with Down syndrome. Sex is also a risk factor; more women than men suffer from Alzheimer's. Past head trauma, mild cognitive impairment, heart health and lifestyle are also risk factors.
Lower the risk of getting Alzheimer's by lowering your chances of getting heart disease. Keep watch of your blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels, diabetes and weight. Eat fresh produce, healthy oils and low-fat foods. Maintain an active lifestyle socially, physically and mentally.
