Many of the things that happen in our society seem to get white-washed with political correctness. We aren't allowed to call people too skinny or too fat, as it might hurt their feelings besides if they are too skinny they probably have anorexia or an eating disorder and if they are too fat it is due to their thyroid condition or some other disease. Likewise, we are not allowed to chastise Alcoholics for their behavior or the problems they cause in our society because alcoholism is a disease and we should instead help them cope with that disease and see that they get treatment. If so
Not long ago, I was discussing this with an acquaintance who noted that; "I reread an article from a few weeks ago where the AMA [American Medical Association] declared obesity a disease and thought about how so many illegal immigrant Hispanic folks are coming to the United States. It seems to me that people cannot become US citizens or even come here to work if they have diseases. I think the unions should look at this issue since they hire a lot of illegals in construction, and other union fields like meat packing plants etc."Wow, those are interesting points aren't they? She went on to add that if people are obese, it's relatively easy to see, and thus, immediately diagnose and deport such illegal aliens or turn back those who are obese entering our country for working VISAs.
Does this sound harsh? It kind of does to me, however we cannot have it both ways. If the politically correct want to demand that obesity is a disease then the laws for those coming to the US with diseases must change to change this issue. But if we say that those with diseases are allowed to come to the US, where do we stop that rule? Should people with untreatable forms of TB be allowed to come here? How about Polio?
Sure, one could say that obesity is not a transferable disease - but if an illegal immigrant comes to the US and has a child, often those children will also become fat, perhaps due to genes, or perhaps due to diet, but either way we know this by simple observations when looking at parents and their children. So, in that regard it does appear to be transferred by either nature or nurture. What if we made the door in the Great Wall that Donald Trump is going to build, fairly skinny and if you cannot fit through - you can't get in? Just thinking on how to rectify this terrible dilemma created by political correctness.
