Essential Oils Aren't Just for the Diffuser

Ancient people used essential oils to heal since time began. Records of healing with essential oils date back to the twelfth century. Modern medicine has turned away from basic healing in favor of pharmaceutical medications. Doctors do not want to jeopardize their standing with the big pharmaceutical companies by suggesting patients use essential oils. That is unless you go to a holistic practitioner. That is where I first discovered essential oils. My holistic chiropractor suggested that I use them and I've been using them ever since. We automatically think that pills are the only answer to what ails us. However, have you ever noticed the long list of side effects that come with these pills? Doesn't that scare you? A doctor may tell you that the side effects are worth taking care of the major problem. Really? I'm not so sure about that!

Doctors don't usually tell us that taking oral medications can damage one's stomach and esophagus. I found this out the hard way and now I have esophagitis. My gastroenterologist told me "Well, the good news is, you don't have cancer!". That scared the crap out of me!As we all know due to the opioid crisis, taking certain painkillers can be addictive. We have seen that painkillers have caused people to buy these drugs on the black market and many have gone so far as to lose their families, jobs, and homes!

Fortunately, there is another way to treat the body. This is through the olfactory system and the skin. The scent or application of essential oils can greatly influence our mental and physical well being.

ESSENTIAL OILS ARE PURE AND SIMPLE

The first thing we have to understand is how essential oils work with the human body? We have something in common with them. Essential oils come from plants. Plants are made of water, carbon, and energy and so are we. Since our biochemistry is similar they resonate with our bodies.

The olfactory system is one of the most powerful conduits into the body. Inhaling the fragrance of essential oils carries molecules into our limbic system which then reaches the brain. This relates to our expressive brain which controls our emotions and stress levels. They can also be used in a diffuser but be sure it is a cold diffuser as heat can destroy certain particles in the oils.

It is amazing what a scent can do to us. Scents have a very powerful influence on us. Certain scents can calm or excite us. Many can bring back memories that are filed away in our hippocampus. The scent of Old Spice brings back fond memories for me of my Daddy. Here are a few everyday uses for essential oils:

Negative energies can be cleared by using scents of sage and cedar.

Lemongrass oil and citronella oil deters mosquitoes, fleas, and flies.Peppermint oil can relieve headaches and send spiders running for the hills.Orange oil can bring one's mood up and invigorateLavender oil can relax one and relieve stress

Essential oils have extremely small molecules that can be quickly absorbed into our skin. These molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream then spread to the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system consists of many parts of the brain. It affects the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine glands. This is a large part of the human body.

Many people have sensitive skin, so before applying these oils it is safer to mix the oil with a base oil such sweet almond or grapeseed oil. More than one oil can also be blended to help certain organs of the body. Once the oil is diluted with the base oil, it can be applied to the skin. Where you apply it depends on what you are treating.

KNOW YOUR APPLICATION POINTS

The trick of using essential oils is knowing where to apply the oil. There are several points on the forehead where the oils can be applied effectively. One point is right between the eyebrows. This is the third eye chakra. Another point is on the temples. The last points are at the base of the head on the left and right sides. I apply peppermint oil to my temples and on the temporal bone behind my ears when I have a bad headache.

PLEASE CONSULT A PRACTITIONER BEFORE YOU START

Before you start, consult an expert and do research to see if a physical condition can possibly be treated using essential oils. Self-treating isn't recommended unless you visit a holistic practitioner first then follow their instructions. I received advice from my holistic chiropractor. Physical chiropractic adjustments are dangerous for me due to my spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. I use these oils for my neck and back pain along with the occasional muscle rub. Although we are alike, our systems are different and respond in different ways. One needs to find a treatment that is right for oneself. I recommend finding a good holistic doctor and see what your options are. If you are able to use essential oils in lieu of prescription drugs, I say go for it.
