What Is MSM and Its Health Benefits

Books have been written on this product which, to many, is a mystery but its health benefits can be amazing. It is Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane or Organic Sulphur. It is claimed to have tremendous value for a wide variety of physical conditions. This article goes through some of them but because of the amount of information it cannot cover everything. To begin with let's look at some of its properties.

Minerals are not readily absorbed by the body and no plant manufactures them. That is why they are mined. Plants absorb them, however, and take up sulphur from the soil, which is essential for their growth. When bound to carbon in the plant the body absorbs them. It is important to note that vitamins cannot function without minerals. That means eating a wide variety of foods and supplements to stay healthy.

Humans get MSM from fresh vegetables, meat, fresh fruits, and seafood. Heat applied to these products along with the processing involved in today's supermarket food reduces the content. It is also depleted in agricultural soils that are abused.

Some reports suggest that people will be sulphur poor unless they eat raw fish and meat and leave vegetables unwashed and uncooked. The levels also decline with age. That is probably another reason why home-grown fruits and vegetables are more palatable, tastier, and, of course, fresh.

BENEFITS OF MSM:

a) It forms crucial blood proteins and amino acids by providing chemical bonds to hold their molecular structure together.

b) Provides the chemical link to form collagen in the body. This is the protein found in connective tissue.

c) It is often referred to as the beauty supplement for that reason. It is essential for thick and luscious hair, blemish free skin, and hard, healthy nails.

d) It acts as an activator and synthesiser of thiamine, vitamin C, biotin, and pantothenic acid.

e) Used by the liver to manufacture bile, essential for roper digestion.

f) Essential for maintaining the bodies crucial pH, or acid/alkaline balance.

g) Its stored in every cell of the body with highest concentrations in joints, hair, skin, and nails.

h) Important component of insulin production. Because it plays a significant role in carbohydrate metabolism it is particularly beneficial for diabetics and hypoglycaemias.

i) It is an important element in over 150 compounds in the body, including tissues, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, antioxidants, and amino acids.

j) Sulphur has also been used for centuries as a healing agent, and this list explains why.

The main thing to know is buy it from a supplier that produces the best MSM. Mine comes from a Canadian Company, which is reliable and in my opinion the best. I am reluctant to buy from a local Health Shop as you don't know the source or how it is prepared.
